Fall Family Minis


There’s something magical about fall in Colorado—the golden light, changing leaves, cozy sweaters, and all those little moments that make you want to freeze time with your family.

This year, Aspen Trails Photography is offering fall mini sessions at TWO beautiful locations across FOUR days, giving families more opportunities to find a date and setting that works for them.

Whether you’re looking for a quick update to the family photos on your walls or want a more relaxed, full experience, here’s everything you need to know about fall mini sessions and how to prepare.

What Is a Fall Mini Session?


A mini session is a shorter, more focused version of a traditional photography session.

Fall minis are designed to capture beautiful family portraits in a limited amount of time. Because the session is shorter, we keep things simple and focus on the most important combinations and moments—your family together, individual children, and a few sweet candid interactions.

They’re perfect for families who:

  • Want updated family photos without committing to a full session
  • Have younger children who may not want to photograph for a long period of time
  • Need a few updated images for holiday cards
  • Want beautiful fall portraits without a lengthy session
  • Love a particular location and want to take advantage of a limited seasonal setup


How Is a Mini Different From a Regular Session?


A mini session is shorter, more structured, and takes place at a specific location and date selected by the photographer. Because we have a limited amount of time together, we focus on a smaller number of poses and combinations.

A regular family session gives us much more time to slow down and let your family interact naturally. We can explore the location, change poses and groupings, capture individual children, and allow plenty of time for those unexpected moments that often become everyone's favorite images.

Think of it this way:

Mini Session: Short + sweet + focused + perfect for updated portraits

Regular Session: Relaxed + personalized + more variety + more time to play and connect

If your children need a little time to warm up, you want a lot of variety, or you have a specific vision for your session, a regular session may be the better choice.

If you simply want gorgeous fall family photos without spending a lot of time in front of the camera, a mini session may be exactly what you're looking for.

Two Locations. Four Days. One Beautiful Fall Season.


This year, I'm excited to offer four full days of fall mini sessions across two different locations!

Offering two locations means you can choose the backdrop that fits your family's style best, while four session dates give you more flexibility when scheduling.

Fall dates in Colorado can be limited, especially when we're trying to catch those beautiful changing leaves at just the right time. That's why I carefully plan these sessions around the expected fall season so we can make the most of that gorgeous Colorado scenery.

Whether you love warm golden foliage, open Colorado landscapes, or a more classic fall setting, there will be an option for you.

What Should We Wear for Fall Photos?


This is probably one of the biggest questions I get—and my best advice is to keep it simple, natural, and timeless.

For fall family photos, I recommend choosing colors and textures that complement the scenery rather than compete with it.

Think:

  • Cream
  • Ivory
  • Beige
  • Tan
  • Camel
  • Soft brown
  • Warm gray
  • Muted sage
  • Dusty blue
  • Soft denim
  • Terracotta
  • Rust
  • Warm neutrals

You don't have to dress everyone in the exact same color. In fact, coordinating is usually much more beautiful than matching.


Start With Mom's Outfit

If you're having trouble deciding what everyone should wear, I recommend choosing one outfit first—often Mom's—and building the rest of the family's outfits around it.

Once you have your main outfit, choose complementary colors and textures for everyone else.

For example:

Mom: Cream sweater dress

Dad: Tan or brown pants + neutral shirt

Child 1: Soft beige sweater + denim

Child 2: Muted sage or warm brown outfit

The result feels coordinated without looking like everyone is wearing the same uniform.

Keep It Comfortable


This is especially important for little ones.

Your children don't need to wear something uncomfortable just because it looks adorable in a photo.

If they're uncomfortable, itchy, too hot, or unable to move, it will show in their expressions.

Choose clothing that allows them to move, play, snuggle, and be themselves.

And don't worry if your child doesn't sit perfectly still or smile at the camera the entire time. Some of my favorite images happen when families are simply interacting with each other.

Don't Forget the Shoes!


Shoes are part of the outfit too!

For fall sessions, boots, simple sneakers, loafers, or neutral sandals can work beautifully depending on the weather and location.

Try to avoid shoes that are extremely bright or have large logos, since they can draw attention away from your family's faces.

Think About Texture


Fall is the perfect season for adding texture to your family's wardrobe.

Think cozy sweaters, knit dresses, corduroy, denim, linen, boots, textured cardigans, and soft layers.

Texture photographs beautifully and adds visual interest without needing bold colors or patterns.

You can also layer pieces to give your outfits a little more dimension. A cardigan, sweater, vest, or jacket can create a completely different look without requiring an entirely different outfit.

What Should You Expect During Your Mini Session?


My goal is for your session to feel easy and fun—not like your family has to perform for the camera.

I'll guide you through different poses and interactions so you aren't left wondering what to do with your hands or where to look.

We'll capture a combination of:

  • Everyone together
  • Parents with the children
  • Individual children
  • Sibling photos
  • Sweet little interactions
  • A few playful moments

And don't worry if your children aren't perfectly cooperative.

That's normal.

Some of the best photographs happen in between the "perfect" moments.
